Business

Presentation Assignment on Business Ethics
In our respective group of maximum 4 members, we are to select a environmental or social issue. Once decided on the issue, we need to research on that specific issue like the causes and effects of that issue and so on. Having researched on the issue we need to present our findings by using power point slides and also with the help of presentation aids.

The purpose of the presentation is to educate students on the importance of business ethics and social responsibility. The topic presented is 'Wasting Water'

Organizational Chart
This exercise has given us insight into the world of business by getting into a business man's shoes in coming up with an organizational chart.

Role Play: Leading your People

We had to do a short role play for the topic "Leading Your People". The role play is about these 5 needs that humans need in life. As a group, some of us acted as refugees and others as normal people. The normal people gave food, clothes, shelter, find jobs etc. to satisfy the refugess 5 needs.

Charity Drive
In this charity drive together with my group, Melvin, Yong Xing and Wen Hao. Our task is to run a business for a week to collect money for charity. The charity we have chosen is an orphanage home, Sri Eden. This project is to help us to get a feel of how it is to run a business for real. Afterwards, we need to write up a report as well as create a short video on this project.

Reflection
Overall, this module has taught me a lot about the real world, the corporate world. This subject as given me insights to how a business basically works and functions. Also but doing all the projects together with my friends we have build our friendship and teamwork as a group. I dare say that this subject would be very boring if it weren't for my lecturer, Mr. Chang Jau Ho who as taken the time to construct creative power point slides, role-play and activities to make it easier to understand as well as enjoyable to learn this module effectively. I can say that this is a great experience for me to learn this subject.

Mathematics

Mathematics Exercise

Area and Volume

Firstly, I read the questions carefully to find out what I need to do. After that, I started drawing all the surface areas of the figure as stated in the question. After drawing the surface areas, I began to calculate the total surface area of the object but calculating each individual surface area and adding them up. Then I calculated the total volume of the object followed by constructing it afterwards.

Mathematical theories

Pythagoras Theorem
a^2 + b^2 = c^2\!\,

Trigonometry
\cos A=\frac{\textrm{adjacent}}{\textrm{hypotenuse}}=\frac{b}{\,c\,}\,.

Area & Volume
s = rθ

Area of circle = 1/2 rθ

Volume = Area x height
                        or
                1/3 x Area x Height

Reflection
This exercise has been a good practice for me especially in the calculation section of the exercise where it can help me for exams in the future. Whereas the construction part of this exercise, I wasn't so keen. Since this is just an exercise and not an assignment, I rushed through the constructing part of the exercise. However, by doing this exercise, I can see the bigger picture where mathematics can actually be used to aid the construction of an object. Other than that, this exercise has also made me manage my time well.

2nd Project
For our 2nd project, we need to choose a topic and from there we have to create a survey questionnaire. Upon collection of the data, we need to use statistics to analyse the data and interpret it. This assignment is designed to provide us students with a hands-on experience on how to conduct a survey, to organize and present the data. At the same time, we need to construct a infographic poster showing the statistics of the survey and the data collected.

Reflection
From this project, I have learned to create a survey, complete with questionnaire forms, graphs and info-graphic poster. Although I prefer to work alone, this project as taught me the importance of working as a group. It is so that we can accomplish what we cannot do alone. Overall I have to admit I enjoy this project in a sense that I get to do this project amongst friends. This assignment is also good experience taking place which is supposed to happen in this point of life where I'm gaining experience to soon venture out into the working world.

Accounting

A) Ratio Analysis Report

The purpose of this report is to analyse the profitability and financial stability of Microsoft Company during the year 2012 - 2013. Based on the analysis we have done, we recommend that the shares of the company be purchased for investment purposes.

B) Description

The concepts and techniques that can be used in the Charity Drive would involve things like writing the Profit & Loss Statement and Balance Sheet to check whether we are on the right track to make money efficiently. By doing so, we can also see our current financial state and therefore decide what to do next to improve it. By doing accounting, we can also ensure that no money is stolen unnoticed.

Trial Balance Exercise 5: Balance Sheet

D) Reflection

For me, this is the first time I'm learning accounting since I didn't take it during Form 5. In this module, I have learned about the uses of accounting which I never knew before. I really enjoyed learning this subject all the way from double entries to cash flow statements, not so much of ratio analysis.

I prefer to look at accounting as a whole even though there are many parts to it because when I split it up each part doesn't really have much of purpose than when I see it as a process. For instance, a case can be written in ledger form then simplified into Profit & Loss Statements and Balance Sheets. From there it can be interpreted into Cash Flow Statements and Ratio Analysis.
My favourite part would be doing the ledger accounts, P&L statements and Balance sheets because I'm most familiar with it can it's more or less just playing around with numbers and it is easier. However for Cash Flow statement and Ratio Analysis are my least favourite because I'm less familiar with them and they are slightly more than just playing around with numbers where at the end of it, an interpretation of the results is needed in order to make a decision.

But overall I enjoy taking this subject. At least now I have basic knowledge when it comes to accounting. However as much as I enjoy accounting, I wouldn't major is this subject because I will bet that it will gets way tougher down the road.

Penang Trip Assignment - Interviewing a Business

In this video, we interview a hotel in Georgetown, Penang. This video will provide an analysis on their respective markets, competitive traits and commercial success.

In this video, we interviewed a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. This video will provide an analysis on their respective markets, competitive traits and commercial success.

Reflection
Economics is a module more or less like business like the theories used for businesses. Among the few things I have learned in economics are things like the demand & supply curve, elastic and inelastic demand curve and monopoly. My favourite topic would be on the area of demand and supply. This is because it is fairly simple to understand and can apply to almost any business. It was covered in one of the early topics so that kind of gave me the first impression of economics. True enough, the later topics like monopolistic competition and oligopolistic competition all had demand curves in them. My least favourite topic would be the 'theory of firm production and cost'. The main point of the topic is to sketch graphs. The reason this is my least favourite is because there are a lot of steps involved when calculating and plotting the graph. All in all I feel that this module is not all hard because to me, nothing is harder than science. Then again the things I have learned in this module is all good experience and knowledge which can hopefully be used in the near future. Overall I like economics because it is very practical when compared to other subjects. It may also be because of the effort our lecturer as put into his teaching in class. He has really made learning economics a fun and memorable experience.

TJ 04

Introduction In this final exercise, we are suppose to design and make a complete book cover. The book cover should be related to all the past exercises and projects, and it must be creatively designed. The book cover should be as real as possible and the cover page should be a montage.

Reflection
At first I thought I was in trouble because I didn't know how to use any photo editing programs except for microsoft powerpoint. But then I figured that I can only do a simple montage since I only use powerpoint. But anyhow I managed to pull it off and this is what I came up with. What I did was just combine different pictures together to form a montage that is related to both the natural and built environment. So from this, I have learnt to do simple editing using powerpoint which I don't normally do.

Reflection
Again this exercise is about being creative in designing a book cover, so surely this has made me more creative. Technically speaking, this exercise has taught me to edit pictures, although just simple pictures. I also believe that I have learnt about the layouts a book should have like the title, artwork, author's name, publishing company and so on. I have also learnt that the possibilities of designing a book cover is endless. This can be useful if I have to write a book in the future.

ICI - FINAL PROJECT

ICI- Final Project

Introduction
Part A
In this first part, we are to plan a construction of a building which involves architect, landscape architect, engineer, contractor and quantity surveyor. With our assigned roles, we have to produce documents that a necessary in a real construction project.

Part B
In this last part, we are to 'create' a company in relation to the roles we are assigned to. While creating the company, we have to include the company profile, financial information, name card, letterhead, envelope and roles of our respective 'occupation'.

Reflection
Through this project, I have learnt about the roles of my occupation (quantity surveyor) in a building project. The QS does not only calculate the cost of the project, but technically handles the financial issues in a project like collecting payments from clients and distributing it to the companies involved. The QS also prepares tender documents and contract documents for the building project. Apart from that, I also learnt how all the professionals come together to play a part in a building project. To me that is very important so that I know where I stand in a project. Honestly, being a future QS, I am quite afraid I will be lousy that preparing the documents and calculating the costs. But I suppose most people gain experience from past projects and especially their mistakes.

ENBE- Final Project

ENBE
The Future City

Introduction
PART A
In this project, we are to come up with a future city- underground city, flying city, underwater city, floating city or enhanced city. We have to focus on how the city works. For instance, the zoning of the city, the layout, the utilities, the services and how it sustains it self. In order to do that, we have to do some research on ancient, present and future cities. By doing so, we have to come up with a video to promote our city, and a booklet report that shows our research.

Reflection
Through this project I have learnt a lot about cities and how they work. A city is not just made up of of heaps upon heaps of buildings but it also needs underground electrical wiring, piping, waste disposal and so on. I also realized that cities are not made overnight but modified throughout the years. Managing the construction of a city is near impossible without a good initial layout or plan. A layout of a city can very much affect the people living in the city. From the ancient cities, I've learnt how cities came about and I've learnt to appreciate the cities we have today. From the present cities, I've learnt about places in the world which I have never even heard of. From the future cities, I've learnt that the cities we have today can be further developed to build a better and brighter environment for people.

In terms of the project, at first I was skeptical on whether i could trust my group members to perform their tasks properly. But towards the end of the project, they all reassured me and tried their best to help out. I guess I've learnt to trust others to do their work and I've also learnt to manage my time better through this project.

PART B
For this part, in groups, we are to choose one of the members' city and make a model of it. It turns out my city was chosen.

After making the model, we have to come up with a presentation board.

'Capturing' PUBLIC SPACES

The objective of this exercise is to investigate public spaces. In order to do that, I have to do a bit of research about what are public spaces and its function, then plan the journey to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Afterwards, I would have to head down to KL to take photos and analyse the public spaces there and record my findings.

REFLECTION
At the end of this exercise, it was a fun experience to just wander around in KL, not to mention taking lots of pictures. We used the Light Rail Transit (LRT) to get to KLCC which was quite a rare opportunity for me. Other than that, I also made friends with my course mates which I didn't really hang out with. Overall, it is a very nice experience, just chilling at KL and taking the time to look at the public spaces and even the things I had never knew was there. This can really help me to prepare and anticipate what is coming in the construction field.

CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS
Idea Journal 4

Introduction
In this exercise, I am suppose to come up with 2 analogy, 2 metaphors, 2 personifications and 2 similes about my object (straw), and another one about anything else.

Reflection
To me, this exercise is a bit weird because we normally do this kind of stuff in english classes. But I guess there is no limit to creativity and imagination. I just brainstormed on analogy, metaphor, personification and simile concerning straws. Actually I am also supposed to find out what are these made of and its meaning. From this exercise, I've learnt to this creatively as well as critically.

Final Project- Game Tournament

THE GAME TOURNAMENT-
CREATING A GAME OUT OF DAILY OBJECTS

Introduction
This is the final project for Creative Thinking Skills. In this project, I need to research about games - what are games, its objectives, its advantages and so on. I also need to investigate and experiment with my object (straw) so that I know its further uses. Using the information I've gathered, I am to create a game out of my object. The game should involve the main function of my object so that it cannot be replaced with other objects.

Reflection
This project is very much like the first project, but this time it is to form a game out of our daily objects. I like these kinds of projects because they are so practical but what hinders me is I have to record everything that happens, even what I am thinking of. But as far as the project goes, I have learnt that making a games requires many steps as well as trials and errors. This is to ensure that the best game is chosen and have no weaknesses. From the first part of the project, I have learnt about the components required in a game such as competition, complexity, tension and so on. I also discovered the different types of games, some require skill, others require strategy and such. I also learnt that, recording the thought process is very important especially in the construction field. From the tournament event, we actually just had lots of fun and it didn't really feel like an assignment anymore. So from that, I've learnt to have fun while I am doing my work.

Interpersonal skills       Communication skills

Part A (Individual)
I am required to make an A4 booklet that contains all the research, experiments and rules of the proposed game including the logo and packaging. I also need to make a demonstration video that shows how the game goes.

Part B (Group)
In units, we are to select one game and further understand, elaborate and refine it. We then need to organise and plan a game tournament event that includes props, the game layout, schedule and prizes for the winners. We also need to come up with a promo video, instruction posters. Through this, we need to document the process involved and take videos or photos of the event.

SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP IN NATURE
This exercise requires me to do some research about symbiosis. But since I already covered this topic during high school, it will be must easier to find information since i still can recall some of the points, such as commensalism, parasitism and mutualism.

REFLECTION
Through this exercise I've learnt to do independent research, note sketching and also improve my drawing skills. From this exercise, I've learnt to do my research online which I never really did before. I also learnt to pinpoint the important key words and facts and record it properly. This exercise is about symbiotic relationships - mutualism, commensalism and parasitism. That means I definitely learnt about how living things relate to one another and supports each other.
