Measurements 1

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) student conference
The purpose of this conference is to gain exposure in what is happening in the construction world to be motivated to continue in this field. The conference was held at University Malaya, in the 'Alam Bina' block.
The conference went on for 2 days, where the first day we had ice-breaking sessions followed by dinner & performance. The second day was the real conference where invited speakers came to present their topics. Sadly, topics that were shared during the conference didn't really makes a lot of sense to me as a newbie in this field. However, I do hope to gain more experience for the years to come.

Site Visit
We visited a construction site to gain exposure and to see the big picture of construction. The construction site we visited is located at Old Klang road, right beside Pearl International Hotel.

Objective of site visit from Jäkê Čhŷį Śêrñ

Assignment
In groups of 10, we are given the drawings for a 5 storey building and we have to measure the frame of the building namely pilecaps, work below lowest floor level, first floor slab and beams, roof slab and beams, column stumps, columns and stiffeners and produce the bill of quantity after measuring.

Reflection
From this module, I have learned that measurements is very important in the construction industry to control the budget of the project and probably that's because this is the main subject in quantity surveying. Also, I find this module still manageable but sometimes unclear in certain areas. I don't like this module nor do I hate it because it is quite frustrating at times when I can't understand the method of measurements but when I do it can be pretty satisfying. However, this is still just the first semester and I have lots more to learn about not only within the classroom but also the world of construction. Overall, I have to say I enjoy this module as a life experience.
